Description
Drive through the Whitewater Way and let all of your senses be treated to North Carolina's wilderness at its most exuberant. Drastic changes in elevation, heavy precipitation, and dense foliage make the Whitewater Way a trip through some of the most striking and lively scenery in North Carolina. The near-tropical rainfall and the dramatic, rocky gorges create a signature environment for this part of North Carolina. Waterfalls are abundant in this southern section of the Nantahala National Forest, and each have a character and personality of their own. The crown jewel of these falls is Whitewater Falls - the highest waterfall east of the Rockies. You can either scramble through the lush undergrowth to find your own personal angle of Whitewater Falls, or you can easily access a spectacular panoramic view on the paved walkway. If you don't feel like leaving your car, you can drive directly under Bridal Veil Falls and experience a flowing sheet of water form a curtain between you and the Nantahala National Forest.
The Whitewater Way begins in Sapphire, a quaint mountain town named not only for the gems mined nearby, but for the crystalline blue sky and plentiful waters that accentuate its bejeweled atmosphere. Sapphire is a charming, year-round destination that boasts a ski resort, golf courses, and more than enough opportunities to strap on a backpack and explore the Blue Ridge Mountains. Heading south, make sure to stop by Gorges State Park, a new addition to the family of North Carolina State Parks. Within its boundaries, you will hear the symphony of water crashing down cliff sides and powerful streams cutting through the verdant woods. The temperate rainforest of Gorges State Park is also ideal nesting grounds for many rare species of plants and animal life. The beautiful Shortia plant is found in only two places on the planet - here and in Japan.
Depending on the season, you will be treated to views of the ever-changing palette of colors as autumn peaks, the natural ice-sculptures captured by the cold of winter, or the foggy mist that rises from Lake Toxaway as spring awakens.
