Description
Asheville's first mansion and oldest extant building, the Smith McDowell House, was built in the pre-Civil War years and has since seen a steady progression of notable residents. These days, the house is open to the public as a history museum, filled with period furnishings and exhibits related to Appalachain life over the centuries. On the grounds there is also a memorial to the hundreds of local men who died fighting in the Civil War and were never properly buried. The Smith McDowell House hosts a variety of seasonal exhibits and programs, contact the facility for more information.
