It's easy to wax eloquent about Asheville, a mountain town in eastern North Carolina that is both thriving arts center and springboard on to some of the state's best natural scenery.
Enjoy this lake not far from NC State University. Boats are allowed here for a small fee and the fishing is pretty good. Non-motorized boats can also be rented for a small fee.

Basic Directions
Using Interstate 40 in Raleigh as a reference point, take exit 297 (Lake Wheeler Road) and drive south, away from Raleigh. Stay on Lake Wheeler Rd, passing across Tryon Rd. Continue on Lake Wheeler Rd. until you pass flashing yellow lights at Simpkins Rd. which connects to Lake Wheeler Rd. on your left. Continue on Lake Wheeler Rd. and the park entrance will be on the road's right side. Make a right into the front entrance of the park and stay on the long winding road to the waterfront. Lake Wheeler Park can only be accessed via Lake Wheeler Rd. Although there is a small bridge that passes over Lake Wheeler by Penny Rd., fishing and the launching of boats is not allowed at that location.
We offer a compact version of Go-North-Carolina for mobile users, allowing you to access just the information you need on the road. Of course, you can still use the full version of Go-North-Carolina on your mobile device just as you can on your desktop.
